The usual Fieldbus measuring device (transmitter) includes a microprocessor which takes readings from a sensor (which may be within the transmitter housing, or external) and converts directly to digital form with an analogue-to-digital converter circuit (often included in the microprocessor chip). Then it applies whatever calculations are needed to convert to the desired engineering units, ready for communication on the network.I think it is not usual to convert an old analogue transmitter for use in a Fieldbus system, but there may be generic analogue input Fieldbus transmitters which could be used (for example a millivolt/volt/milliamp input device).
